Beauty’s oldest ingredient: Honey

Used in everything from hair and skin, to hands and baths, honey remains a perfect natural addition to your beauty regime.

Honey is no stranger to the cosmetics industry - as a humectant it’s known to slow down the loss of moisture from products, as well as being a familiar fragrance and natural skin softener. “Superfood” ingredients are increasingly being added to beauty products, with their health benefits reaching beyond the remit of food consumption, and into the world of cosmetics.

The use of honey has been long documented, with Cleopatra’s infamous milk and honey baths spanning centuries, and pivoting forwards to the present day. Recently, we’ve been asking the question; what can honey add to your beauty regime?

We know that the nectar from which honey is derived is full of natural sugars including fructose and glucose, substances that react with the bees’ enzymes to give honey an acidic pH of around 3.9. According to scientists, certain bacteria won’t survive in this acidity, and with the added stickiness helping to fight against unwanted microorganisms, honey is an ideal ingredient to treat and soothe acne.

In addition to its combative qualities, honey is known for its antioxidant properties and ability to help repair and renew skin cells, with many anti-ageing products often using it to optimise their impact. Adding to its restorative treatment repertoire, honey’s moisturising qualities are due to its hygroscopic properties, a process of drawing and absorbing moisture from the air, that helps to keep both hair and skin fresh and replenished.
